I Fail

Julian van der Wouden·1 min read

Everyone celebrates success. But how you catch yourself when you fall, that's where your story truly begins. What if failure isn't an obstacle, but the doorway to real freedom?

For too long, I treated failure like the final result.

But failure is often only a picture of one moment.

A temporary score.

A judgment made too early.

What looks like failure today

may later turn out to be the exact point

where everything started to turn.

Because I kept moving.

Out of hunger.

To not live smaller than I can.

What I keep telling myself:

  • Failure is not an identity. It is feedback. Pure information.
  • A failure is sometimes only success with a longer time horizon and knowledge I do not have yet. I do not see the whole picture yet.
  • If I move, I risk falling. If I stand still, I lose anyway.
  • My definition determines whether something breaks me or forms me.
  • I do not need to win immediately. I get to keep learning until it shifts. And if it does not shift, that is okay too. I am already here.
  • Every fall means I am still in the game.
  • I am not finished because something did not work. I am in motion.
  • The only real failure is stopping before I have surprised myself.
  • Failure is part of success.
  • I define success.
  • So I decide whether I “fail”.
